you saved the world,
but at what cost?
you saved the world
yourself you lost
this world was never
just your cross to bear
you’re not the only one
that always has to care
you’ve started down evil
in the eye, you’ve tried
to be the better guy
you fought so long
against the dark
your flame burned
down to lonely spark
this weight of power
a curse or gift?
a heavy burden
you must lift alone
this world is always
in distress, you never
get a chance to rest
and as the time goes
by you slowly start
to loose your why
the lines begin to fade
away from black and
white to shades of grey
and yes, you’re super,
this is true, but don’t
forget you’re human too
“you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” – The Dark Knight
NaPoWriMo 2024 – Day 23: Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem about, or involving, a superhero, taking your inspiration from these four poems in which Lucille Clifton addresses Clark Kent/Superman.
